Android Application Development

Android is an open source software stack created for a wide array of devices with different form factors. Android’s primary purpose is to create an open software platform available for carriers, OEMs, and developers to make their innovative ideas a reality and to introduce a successful, real-world product that improves the mobile experience for users.

Android is designed so that there’s no central point of failure, where one industry player restricts or controls the innovations of another. The result is a full, production-quality consumer product with source code open for customization and porting.

Why Android?

Market Share

Overall, Android share for 2018 was 85.1% according to IDC and is expected to increase slightly in 2019 at 85.9% in 2019. Furthermore, there is something for everyone on the Android platform. The sheer variety of Android smartphones from manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, Sony, Motorola, LG, Huawei, ZTE, and others is staggering.

Open Source

There is only one version of iOS whereas there are thousands of different versions of Android to chose from. It also means that you have much more contributors, testers and bug spotters as the general public have access to it whereas the only people who have access to iOS code are the developers themselves which really limits the expandability and future of the software.

High Customization

Something you definitely do not get with iOS is the ability to change pretty much anything you want so it suits you. You can change anything from the startup animations to the names of your applications. While Apple wants to keep control of default apps in order to maintain a homogenous software and hardware experience, Android lets you pick your own level of customization.

As of Jun 2019, Android Pie is the ninth major version of the Android operating system. It was first announced by Google on March 7, 2018, and the first developer preview was released on the same day. The first official release was released on August 6, 2018.
